The Start Of Kenworth Trucks
The story begins in 1912. Two brothers named George and Louis Gerlinger, Jr. were proprietors of Gerlinger Motor Car Works. Based in the city of Portland, Oregon, the company sold cars and trucks from different brands.
The brothers noticed a problem. The current trucks on the market didn't come with very powerful engines. They decided to get to work crafting their own models with better engines.
In 1916, the Gerlinger Motor Company moved to Tacoma, Washington. Captain Frederick Kent and Edgar K. Worthington bought the company the next year. These two businessmen were interested in the growing field of truck production and saw potential in the company they purchased. In 1923, the company was renamed as Kenworth - a combination of their two last names.
Development Of Kenworth Dump Trucks
The company headquarters was established in Seattle, Washington, and soon the first Kenworth trucks were released. In 1924, the company made 80 trucks. Over the years, this number grew and grew. The company became known for the customization opportunities, helping drivers get exactly what they needed. It’s a key feature that leads to the popularity of today’s Kenworth dump trucks - easy customization to customer needs.
In 1929, a new factory opened. The Great Depression significantly affected the company, but Kenworth managed to remain open. They even expanded the product offerings to include fire trucks.
During the 1930s, it became standard for Kenworth trucks to offer diesel engines. This helped expand the company's popularity and sales. After World War Two, Kenworth was purchased by Pacific Car and Foundry. The post-war boom helped increase production of Kenworth dump trucks and more factories were built to keep up with demand.
